Anand Kumar Stuns World Champion to Win Gold & Bronze at World Skating Championship in China

India’s rising skating sensation Anand Kumar scripted history at the World Skating Championship 2025, securing Gold in the 1000m race and Bronze in the 500m +D race, marking one of India’s biggest international skating achievements.


In the 1000m race, Anand clocked 84 seconds to clinch the Gold medal, defeating none other than Duccio Marsili of Italy — the reigning World Champion, World Games Athlete of the Year 2024, and a skater decorated with multiple Gold medals across various inline speed skating categories. This victory is being hailed as a breakthrough moment for Indian skating.


Anand followed up with another strong showing in the 500m +D race, where he finished in 43.07 seconds to earn the Bronze medal, once again proving his consistency and ability to shine against the world’s best.


The championship, hosted in Beidaihe, China, featured elite skaters from over 40 nations. Anand’s double-medal performance has not only lifted India’s profile on the international skating stage but has also ignited pride and excitement among fans and young skaters back home.


With his inspiring triumph, Anand Kumar has positioned himself among the top global competitors in inline speed skating, raising hopes for even more medals in the years to come.

Skating by day, coding by night: Engineering student Anandkumar's road to glory

He came in chasing a podium. He left as a world champion. Anandkumar Velkumar, a 22-year-old speed skater from Chennai, did what very few Indian athletes have even dared to dream of. At the World Speed Skating Championships in Beidaihe, China,   he zipped past the competition to take gold  and also become India’s first-ever world champion in inline speed skating. All this while splitting his time between dodging traffic during early training sessions in Chennai and late-night assignments as a computer engineering student. “It actually felt really amazing to be world champion in my sport.
