He came in chasing a podium. He left as a world champion. Anandkumar Velkumar, a 22-year-old speed skater from Chennai, did what very few Indian athletes have even dared to dream of. At the World Speed Skating Championships in Beidaihe, China,   he zipped past the competition to take gold  and also become India’s first-ever world champion in inline speed skating. All this while splitting his time between dodging traffic during early training sessions in Chennai and late-night assignments as a computer engineering student. “It actually felt really amazing to be world champion in my sport.   Beidaihe, China – September 15, 2025 India’s rising skating sensation Anand Kumar scripted history at the World Skating Championship 2025 , securing Gold in the 1000m race and Bronze in the 500m +D race , marking one of India’s biggest international skating achievements. In the 1000m race , Anand clocked 84 seconds to clinch the Gold medal , defeating none other than Duccio Marsili of Italy — the reigning World Champion , World Games Athlete of the Year 2024 , and a skater decorated with multiple Gold medals across various inline speed skating categories . The TNRSA has officially released the 2025 District Roller Skating Championships schedule, spanning key districts across Tamil Nadu. Highlighted below are major events happening this month: • Cuddalore : September 13–14 — speed, freestyle, and artistic skating competitions await. • Dindigul : Multiple rounds on September 6, 13, and 14. • Erode : One-day showdown on September 21. • Kanchipuram : Speed event only, from September 26 through 28. • Dharmapuri : A highlight one-day event on September 27.
