Skating by day, coding by night: Engineering student Anandkumar's road to glory
He came in chasing a podium. He left as a world champion. Anandkumar Velkumar, a 22-year-old speed skater from Chennai, did what very few Indian athletes have even dared to dream of. At the World Speed Skating Championships in Beidaihe, China, he zipped past the competition to take gold and also become India’s first-ever world champion in inline speed skating. All this while splitting his time between dodging traffic during early training sessions in Chennai and late-night assignments as a computer engineering student. “It actually felt really amazing to be world champion in my sport. It’s every athlete’s dream to become world champion one day in their respective sport, and I was able to make that happen today,” Anandkumar said in an exclusive interaction with IndiaToday.in.
